Md Shahadat Hossain: In Chittagong the government is constructing new houses for 1,374 homeless families in Mujib Year.Those who do not have land and houses in 8 upazilas of Chittagong – these houses will be given as a gift of Mujib Year under the supervision of local administration.
According to district administration officials, 1,374 homeless families will be provided new houses in Rangunia, Patia, Chandnaish, Satkania, Lohagara, Banshkhali and Fatikchhari in Chittagong under the Guchhgram (Phase II) project.
Of these, 65 in Rangunia, 502 in Patiya, 5 in Chandnaish, 134 in Satkania, 18 in Lohagara, 25 in Banshkhali and 600 homeless families in Fatikchhari will get these two-room semi-detached houses with 200 khas land settlement.
In the first phase, out of 1,374 homeless families, 238 families will be given new houses with 200 percent land settlement by January 15.The rest will get government khas land settlement and new semi-detached houses in phases.
Among those who got new houses at this time are 10 homeless families from Rangunia, 60 from Patiya, 5 from Chandnaish, 25 from Satkania, 18 from Lohagarh, 25 from Banshkhali and 70 from Fatikchhari.
In the meantime, the concerned ministry has allocated Tk 40.89 crore in favor of the concerned Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) for constructing new houses for 238 families.
The cost of construction of each house has been estimated at Tk 1 lakh 71 thousand.Built of brick walls, concrete floors and tin canopies,these semi-detached rooms will have 2 bedrooms,1 open veranda,1 kitchen and 1 toilet.
Among the 8 upazilas of Chittagong, the homeless people of Fatikchhari upazila are getting the most houses as a gift of Mujib Year. This upazila executive officer (UNO) said.Saidul Arefin said the process of constructing new houses for landless and homeless people has been started after receiving government instructions.
He said that the government khas lands in the upazila on which houses will be constructed for the landless and homeless are being prepared for construction.Construction of houses for the homeless in Fatikchhari upazila will start in the next 2-3 days.The homeless will be informed by constructing houses at the time directed by the government.
Chittagong Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) SM Zakaria said the government has taken initiative to build new houses for those who are landless and homeless in category A and those who have land but no house in category B as a gift of Mujib Year.
He said,”We have sent the list of 1,374 landless and homeless families in category A to the concerned ministry.”In the first phase, 238 families have been allotted land and houses.The rest will be given houses in phases with land settlement.
‘Honorable Prime Minister has taken initiative to build houses for all the homeless people of the country in the year of Mujib.The district administration is working relentlessly to implement that initiative in Chittagong.This official of Chittagong district administration added.
Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Jabed said the land ministry is working to ensure that not a single person in the country remains homeless as per the directives of the Hon’ble Prime Minister. In the next two months,about 3,000 landless and homeless families across the country, including Chittagong,are being given new houses with settlement.
He said that initially these families will get new houses with land settlement as a gift of Mujibvarsha.All land and homeless families will be brought under it in phases.We will implement the groundbreaking initiative taken by Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina to build houses for all landless and homeless people in the year of Mujib.
