With reporters in Kapasia Exchange of views of brick kiln owners association

Hasib Khan: The Kapasia Upazila Brick Owners’ Association held an exchange meeting on Sunday as the long-running business was suddenly threatened due to the new policy of the Department of Environment. Kapasia Press Club and Upazila Awami League President Muhammad Shahidullah addressed the meeting as the chief guest at the newly constructed building of Jobaida Memorial Hospital in Kapasia Bus Stand area.

Md. Mosharraf Hossain, president of Kapasia Upazila Brickfield Owners’ Association, said in a written statement that he had been conducting business legally till 2016 by constructing eco-friendly air chimneys in 30 brickfields in Kapasia as per government instructions. But with the enactment and enforcement of the ‘Brick Making and Kiln Installation (Control) Act, 2013 (Amended 2019)’, it is no longer possible to conduct business legally.

However, they have already invested crores of rupees in building a brick field by taking a loan from a bank and combining whatever was available. Therefore, it is not possible for them to get back the invested capital and survive in any other way by suddenly closing down this business. Moreover, starting from low-income people, about 15,000 people at different levels are making a living from being associated with these brickyards.

In this case, considering the humanitarian aspect, if they are given the opportunity to do business for the next two years, they will get back the invested capital and will be free from debt.

General Secretary of Upazila Awami League Md. Mizanur Rahman Pradhan, Vice Chairman of Upazila Parishad Md. Asaduzzaman Asad, Women Vice Chairman Raushan Ara Sarkar, General Secretary of Brick Owners Association Badruzzaman Bepari among others spoke on the occasion.
