Sylhet Representative : In Jaintapur, Sylhet, the handcuffed accused was identified by the police. The incident took place around 12:30 pm on Tuesday in front of Nizam Uddin’s grocery shop in Haripur Bazar of Fatehpur Union No. 5 of Jaintapur Upazila. However, the police claimed that the accused was handcuffed and ran away. The man is Abdul Jalil, 42, son of late Abdullah of Lamashampur village in the union.
According to local sources, Abdul Jalil, an accused in multiple cases under the Special Powers Act, had been a fugitive for a long time. Jaintapur Model Police Station SI Russell along with a group of policemen arrested him in Hatena on Tuesday night on the basis of secret information. At one stage, some miscreants who were with Jalil forcibly identified him from the police.
The hustle and bustle started. A team of Sylhet RAB-9 including Jaintapur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohsin Ali rushed to the spot. He was handed over to the police with the help of locals at around 6 in the morning. Earlier, the RAB-police had to wait for about 5 and a half hours. The incident has caused a commotion. Meanwhile, a source said that even after taking him into police custody, he was not handcuffed.
Talking to SI Russell of Jaintapur Model Police Station on the phone, he admitted the truth of the incident and said that he ran away while being handcuffed. He was later rescued by locals. He said he was sent to court on Wednesday morning.
When contacted, Jaintapur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohsin Ali said there were three cases against Jalil under the Special Powers Act. He was a warranted accused in those cases. Upon receiving the news of this incident, he immediately reached the spot. Later, with the help of local UP member Abdur Rashid and an Awami League leader, the locals handed him over to the police.
