Kushtia Bureau: International Disaster Mitigation Day-2020 has been celebrated in Kumarkhali, Kushtia. A discussion meeting was held at the Upazila Parishad conference room at 10.00 am on Tuesday on the occasion of the day organized by the Upazila administration.
The theme of the day is ‘Disaster Risk Reduction Good Governance, Ensuring Sustainable Development’. Speakers at the discussion said that Bangladesh is a disaster prone region due to its geographical reasons. The people of this country have been adapting to the disaster for a long time.
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started disaster risk reduction activities in 1972 after the independence of the country. At that time Mujib fort was built to shelter the people affected by natural calamities. The speakers said that the more disaster preparedness can be taken, the more it is possible to reduce the damage caused by the disaster. That is why there is no alternative to awareness among people.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) Kumarkhali M.A Muhaimin Al Jihan presided over the function. Welcoming remarks were made by Project Implementation Officer Md. Mahmudul Islam. Upazila Parishad Women Vice Chairman Marina Akhter Mina, Agriculture Officer Debashish Kumar Das, Social Service Officer Mohammad Ali, Fire Service and Civil Defense Station Officer Amiya Kumar, Deputy Assistant Engineer Alimul Reza. Journalist Zaker ALi Shuva and others also spoke. The meeting was attended by government officials, teachers and students, including the fire service.
