Elections to 163 Union Parishad (UP) constituencies have been postponed due to increased corona infection.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Election Commission on Thursday. Later, the Election Commission (EC) Secretary briefed reporters. Humayun Kabir Khandaker.
He said elections to 163 union councils have been postponed due to increased coronary infections. Of these, 6৮ are in Bagerhat, 34 in Khulna, 21 in Satkhira, 13 in Noakhali, 12 in Chittagong and 15 in Cox’s Bazar. However, 204 Union Parishads will vote in time.
The EC secretary said that although 11 municipal elections were supposed to be held on the same day 9 have been suspended. However, voting will be held in time in Setabganj municipality of Jhalokati and Dinajpur.
Comilla-5, Dhaka-14 and Sylhet-3 of the Jatiya Sangsad – the date of voting has been changed in these three constituencies, the EC secretary said, adding that the by-elections in these three constituencies were supposed to be held on July 14. As the date has been changed, voting in these three constituencies will now be on July 28.
However, he said that the by-election of Laxmipur-2 constituency will be held on June 21.
