Fourteen policemen have been suspended for stealing motorcycles from the garage of the divisional headquarters in Barisal. A departmental case has also been filed against the 14 policemen of Gournadi and Wazirpur police stations for negligence in performing night patrol duty.
Barisal Range Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) SM Akhtaruzzaman confirmed the matter on Tuesday afternoon.
He said the 14 policemen have been attached to the police lines after their suspension. At the same time, a departmental case has been filed against them.
According to Barisal Range Police Office sources, a divisional case was filed against 14 policemen of Wazirpur and Gournadi police stations on July 3. However, the matter was announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The 14 fired police members are – Uzirpur police sub-inspector (SI) said. Ziaul Haider, Constables Rabiul Islam, Sohail Rana and Imran Hossain and Gournadi Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Chagir Hossain, Gaffar Hossain, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sohrab Hossain, Constable Kamal Hossain, Iqbal Hossain, Mursalin Mia, Amrit Lal , Mehedi Hasan and Driver (Constable) Abdul Haque Rana.
Akhtaruzzaman said a motorcycle was stolen from the garage of the Kashipur divisional headquarters in the early hours of June 2. Close-circuit camera footage showed an unidentified thief riding a motorcycle crossing the Wazirpur and Gournadi police stations on the Dhaka-Barisal highway. The thief was able to escape on a motorcycle on the highway of Wazirpur and Gournadi police stations that night as he did not perform his patrol duty properly. This was possible due to the negligence of those who were supposed to be on night duty. Therefore, a departmental case has been filed against the 14 policemen concerned.
He added that from now on, the number of vehicles plying on the Barisal section of the Dhaka-Barisal highway every two hours has been monitored. Suspects are also being searched on motorcycles and cars.
